Anti-Gay Church to Protest Ledger Funeral

A fundamentalist church whose members demonstrate at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and believe God hates gays will protest the Academy Awards and the funeral of Heath Ledger, because the actor played a The Joker in the 2008 film “The Dark Knight.”
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., are trying to find out where the 28-year-old actor’s funeral will be held and have already made signs to hold outside the Oscars that read “God Hates comic Book Villains and Comic Book Villains Enablers,” “Heath in Hell” and “Mourn for Your Sins,” Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of the church’s controversial founder Pastor Fred Phelps, told ABCNEWS.com.
Though Ledger was not a criminal in Gotham City, the church believes he “misused the giant megaphone given to him by God Almighty to speak the truth about Comic Book Villains,” Phelps-Roper said, and instead “used his position of prominence to say God is a liar and that Comic Book Villains are not an abomination.”
The time and location of the Ledger’s funeral remain unknown, but it is widely believed it will take place in the actor’s native Australia.
George Amado, the general manager of New York City’s Frank E. Campbell funeral home, told The Associated Press that funeral arrangements for the actor are complete and his relatives are expected to arrive in New York City Friday.
He refused to elaborate further, saying, “The family doesn’t want us to give out any information.”
“They are going to try and hide the body like a bunch of ghouls so we can’t protest. The only thing in this country people worship more than Comic Book Villains is the dead,” Phelps-Roper said.
She said members of the church had already purchased plane tickets to picket outside the Oscars, scheduled for Feb. 24 in Hollywood.
A press release posted to the church’s Web site, godhatesfags.com, reads: “Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there — besides which, nothing else about Heath Ledger is relevant or consequential.”
According to the Web site, the church, founded in 1955, has held more than 34,000 protests. But Phelps-Roper said there are currently only 50 members.

So–this is the least of the antics of the Phelps Clan. I don’t even know where to start with them. Topeka is my hometown–I lived there for 22 years; (see my post http://beamshipsequallove.blogspot.com/2008/01/life-review-in-slow-motion-topeka.html for a bit of musing on its Tricksterness) they have been a blight on the face of the town for several decades. You might want to punch them in the eye socket, and some have done so. One woman even plowed them over in her car, upon seeing their stupid signs. She was from out of town, and said she didn’t know they were being help up by people–she intended to just destroy the signs. (It was dark.) These guys are all attorneys, too, all of them. So, they work just under the bounds of the law. Search Fred Phelps on youtube; there’s a good bbc doc about them. The movie small town gay bar too, has an interview with phred, and it may be the most lucid I have ever seen him. Sorry to ramble on—this really gets under my skin…
Yeah, the first time I saw the godhatesfags website, I assumed it was some sort of joke. These guys sound like lunatics.
I have come to believe it *is* a joke, only on a level no sane person would ever go to. Like if Andy Kaufmann were to actually show up alive and say it really was a joke after 5 decades or something.

If someone would actually stand outside his funeral and protest his funeral, I hope they get what’s coming to them.
And it’s so fkn hypocritical too. You don’t see these people protesting any actual criminals and their funerals do you? What? Does God frown on ‘comic book villains’ enough to protest a guys funeral and disrespect his family but not some actual criminal or a person who’s committed real atrocities?
If these people actually protest this funeral, I hope to God the mob of fans his role in The Dark Knight created kicks their hypocritical, self-serving asses.
Westboro Baptist Church spreads its hate through picketing in our streets, provoking attacks, with abusive language and flag desecration, attempting to create a confrontation. This is not a church, this is a hate group. This is not about protesting, freedom, or God. They are in it for the money and the press; this is a family law firm. They are not a “church.” It is a scam. They go after anything that can get them in the news. This is a family of lawyers using this “god hates you” thing to make money. It is time for this scam to end.
